Background of the Study
Traditional healing practices have long been integral to healthcare in many African communities, offering culturally resonant methods of treatment and wellness. In Awka North Local Government Area, Anambra State, these practices—ranging from herbal medicine and spiritual healing to community rituals—continue to coexist with modern medical systems (Ifeanyi, 2023). The integration of traditional and modern practices is viewed as a potential means to enhance overall health outcomes by bridging cultural gaps and improving patient satisfaction (Uche, 2024). However, challenges such as regulatory issues, standardization, and mutual distrust between traditional healers and modern practitioners persist (Egbunike, 2025). This study critically assesses the effectiveness, challenges, and opportunities associated with integrating traditional healing into the formal healthcare system in Awka North.

Statement of the Problem
Despite the widespread use of traditional healing practices in Awka North, there is limited understanding of how these practices can be effectively integrated into modern healthcare systems (Okeke, 2023). This lack of integration often results in fragmented healthcare delivery and missed opportunities for holistic treatment. Regulatory challenges and skepticism between practitioners further complicate the process. The study aims to bridge this gap by providing evidence on the potential benefits and barriers to integration, thereby supporting the development of collaborative frameworks that enhance overall healthcare outcomes (Chinwe, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

To document the traditional healing practices in Awka North.

To evaluate the integration of traditional and modern healthcare systems.

To recommend strategies for effective collaboration between the two systems.

Research Questions:

What are the predominant traditional healing practices in Awka North?

How are these practices integrated into the modern healthcare system?

What barriers and facilitators affect this integration process?

Research Hypotheses:

Traditional healing practices significantly complement modern healthcare.

Regulatory challenges hinder the effective integration of traditional practices.

Collaborative frameworks will enhance overall healthcare outcomes in Awka North.

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it investigates the potential benefits of integrating traditional healing practices with modern healthcare. The findings will inform policy and practice, fostering collaboration that enhances patient outcomes and cultural sensitivity in healthcare delivery (Eke, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
Limited to the topic only.

Definitions of Terms:

Traditional healing: Indigenous methods of treating illnesses using cultural practices and natural remedies.

Modern healthcare: Contemporary medical practices based on scientific research and clinical protocols.

Integration: The process of combining traditional and modern health practices into a cohesive system.
